A Retelling of "Nasori No Kyu"

.program note

A Retelling of "Nasori No Kyu" places the source Komagaku tune and orchestrational characteristics in a Western-instrumental context. Comprised of wind and percussion instruments, the Komagaku orchestra provides traditional accompaniment to Japanese court dances. Re-contextualizing these instruments and the tune itself for performance on the Western-violin was my primary goal for choosing to re-set this particular tune. I was particularly interested in achieving a representation of the Komagaku's drum patterns which serve to both regulate the tempo of the piece and to delineate its larger sections. In addition to the Komagaku's percussive elements, the two other instruments represented orchestrationally are the komabue (a bamboo flute) and the hichiriki (a double reeded instrument). As it would be in the original work, the tune proper is stated in the hichiriki voice.
